10 Ways to Celebrate Earth Month (And Actually Feel Good About It)

April is Earth Month — and around here, that’s basically our Super Bowl. As an Aveda salon, sustainability isn’t just a seasonal marketing campaign to us; it’s our North Star year round. We truly believe that taking care of the planet and taking care of yourself can be the same thing.

So to celebrate, we’re sharing ten of our favorite ways to celebrate Earth Month. Some are big shifts, others small swaps, but they’re all worth carrying with you long after the calendar turns to May.

  1. Book a Service That Gives Back

This April, Spa Bleu is participating in Aveda’s Efforts for Aveda campaign — and we couldn’t be more proud of it. A portion of proceeds from services booked this month supports two incredible causes: Charity: Water, a nonprofit bringing clean drinking water to communities around the world, and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, which protects the freshwater supply for over 40 million people, including right here in the Chicago suburbs.

Your balayage, facial, or massage appointment this month does double duty. That’s a good reason to finally book the thing you’ve been putting off.

  1. Switch to Litre-Size Products

This one is the ultimate low-effort, high-reward swap. Upgrading your favorite Aveda shampoo or conditioner to a litre size saves you about 20% per ounce and cuts plastic waste by up to 28%. That means less waste, more product, and a lower cost per wash. Ask us about litre options at any of our three locations — we’re happy to help you find the right fit for your hair.

  1. Try a No-Wash Day

Washing your hair every day isn’t doing your hair — or the planet — any favors. Skipping a wash preserves your natural oils, keeps your color vibrant longer, and saves a surprising amount of water over time.

  1. Audit Your Beauty Cabinet

What you put on your body matters just as much as what you put in it. Aveda’s professional formulas are non-toxic, cruelty-free, and packaged in post-consumer recycled materials. If you’ve been curious about wanting to clean up your beauty routine but don’t know where to start, stop by the salon! We love having conversations about hair types, skin concerns, and sustainability.

  1. Go Paperless Everywhere You Can

Between catalogs and paper bills, most mail goes straight from the mailbox to the recycling bin. Switching to paperless billing and digital newsletters is one of the easiest green habits to build, and it adds up quickly. While you’re at it, sign up for our email list so you never miss a Spa Bleu special — no paper required.

  1. Get Outside More

Simple, free, and good for your soul. Instead of the usual dinner-and-a-movie routine, take your people on a hike, visit a local farmers market, or go for a long bike ride. The Chicago suburbs have some stunning green spaces, and sometimes we can use a reminder of exactly what we’re working so hard to protect.

  1. Host a Clothes Swap – or Come to Ours

Before you donate your spring closet clean-out, consider hosting a “Sip & Swap” with friends. One person’s castoffs are often another person’s treasure, and it’s a much more fun version of shopping. The clothes stay in circulation, nothing ends up in a landfill prematurely, and someone always goes home with something they love.

And if you want to take that idea to the next level — we’ve got just the event for you.

🌿 Upcycled for Earth Month — A Recycled Fashion Show at Spa Bleu St. Charles

On Friday, April 25th, join us at our St. Charles location for Upcycled for Earth Month — a one-of-a-kind fashion show celebrating recycled style for an everyday look. Outfits will be sourced entirely from Double Take Consignment, styled and brought to life by the Spa Bleu team, and walked the runway to prove that sustainable fashion is anything but an afterthought.

Doors open at 6:00 PM | Show starts at 7:00 PM

Every ticket is a $25 donation, with all proceeds benefiting Charity: Water and the Alliance for the Great Lakes. It’s a night of fashion, fun, and genuine purpose.

Here’s what to expect:

  • 👗 Runway looks sourced from Double Take Consignment
  • 💄 Hair & makeup by the Spa Bleu team
  • 🥂 Light appetizers (graciously donated) and drinks available for a $10 donation
  • 🎟️ Raffle tickets for gift baskets
  • 🚗 Valet parking available for $10 at the event

Tickets are limited — grab yours and bring a friend. This is the kind of night that’s good for your wardrobe, your community, and your conscience.

  1. Share Your Ride

If you’re heading somewhere you can walk or bike to — go for it. For longer trips, consider carpooling, public transit, or the shared ride option on your rideshare app. It’s a small habit, but the reduction in your carbon footprint (and the fresh air from a quick walk) can really add up.

  1. Get Crafty With Your Empties

Before your Aveda bottles hit the recycling bin, see if they have a second life in them. Glass bottles make beautiful vases or candle holders, and plastic containers are perfect for seed starters or office organizers. It’s a fun, 30-second project that’s especially great if you have kids who love to DIY.

  1. Support a Local Cause

This one is close to our hearts. Through Aveda’s Efforts for Aveda campaign, Spa Bleu is directing proceeds this April toward the Alliance for the Great Lakes — an organization working to protect and restore the Great Lakes for future generations. If you live near South Barrington, West Dundee, or St. Charles, those lakes are part of your daily life. Come in, treat yourself, and know that your appointment is directly contributing to the restoration of our local water supply.

We’d love to celebrate Earth Month with you this April — and every month after that. Book your appointment online or give us a call at any of our three locations, and don’t forget to ask about our current specials. Here’s to beauty with a purpose.
